How Much Does a Garden Office Cost?
A clear breakdown of what you are paying for in a garden office, which items move the number most, and where it is worth spending.
Garden office prices online span an enormous range, and the headline figure usually excludes the things that make the building work. Rather than quote numbers that date, here is how the cost is actually assembled so you can compare quotes properly.
The cost stack
- Groundworks and base - access, spoil removal, levels, ground conditions, tree roots
- Structure and envelope - frame, insulation, membranes, roof covering
- Glazing - the single biggest swing item; large sliding or bifold sets cost multiples of a window
- Cladding - species, grade and detailing; charred or hand-finished timber sits at the top
- Electrics - armoured supply run length, consumer unit, lighting, data, certification
- Interior - flooring, joinery, decoration, heating
- Landscaping around it - path, terrace, screening planting, lighting
What moves the number most
In our experience three items dominate. First, access: if every barrow of concrete has to come through a narrow side return, the groundworks cost rises sharply. Second, glazing: a five-metre sliding screen can cost more than the entire frame. Third, ground conditions: sloping plots, clay and nearby mature trees all push the base specification up.

Where cheap quotes hide their savings
- A paving-slab or timber-bearer base instead of an engineered one
- No drainage cavity behind cladding
- Single-glazed or non-thermally-broken doors
- Electrics run by a general builder without certification
- No allowance for making good the garden after the works
Each of those is a real saving today and a real cost later. If one quote is dramatically lower, find the line item that explains it before you decide.
Getting a number you can rely on
We survey the site, confirm access and ground conditions, then issue an itemised specification and cost so you can see exactly what each element contributes. If the total is above where you want to be, we can adjust glazing, cladding or interior finish knowingly, rather than quietly downgrading what holds the building up.
Where we work
We design and build gardens, garden rooms and pergolas across Mid Sussex and the surrounding towns.
