Garden Designer vs Landscaper: Who Should You Hire for a Full Garden Project?
Separate designer, separate contractor, or one design-and-build team? The choice affects budget, accountability and the finished garden.

If you are planning a garden over £20,000 in Sussex, Surrey or Kent, the first decision is not the paving. It is who you hire, and how the design and the build connect.
Option 1: An independent garden designer
A designer produces plans and planting schemes, then you tender to landscapers. Strong creatively, but drawings are often priced well above budget, and responsibility splits when something goes wrong.
Option 2: A landscaper only
Ideal for a straightforward patio, fencing or turf. Without a plan, larger projects get decided on site, which is where costs drift.
Option 3: Design-and-build
One team surveys, designs, prices and builds. The design is drawn knowing what it costs to construct, and there is one point of accountability from first sketch to final planting.

How to choose
- Ask to see finished local projects, not renders
- Check who carries out groundworks and drainage
- Ask how the design is priced against your budget
- Read Google reviews that name the work and town
Common questions
- Do I need a garden designer or a landscaper?
- For a simple patio or turf, a good landscaper is enough. For a full garden with levels, structures, lighting and planting, you need design. A design-and-build company gives you both under one contract, so the people pricing the build drew the plan.
- Is design and build cheaper than hiring separately?
- Often it is better value, because the design is drawn to a realistic build budget and there is no gap between what was designed and what gets priced. Separate designs are frequently redrawn once contractors quote.
