Garden Room with a Sauna: What to Plan For

We are increasingly asked for one building that holds a sauna alongside a gym or office - a recent Sussex cottage-style room does exactly that. It is a good use of a single footprint, provided the wet and dry zones are treated as genuinely separate rooms.

Separate the zones

The sauna cabin needs its own enclosure with its own vapour control and ventilation, sitting inside the main building rather than borrowing its walls. Between the sauna and the dry space, plan a changing or cool-down area with a tiled or stone floor and a drain if you are adding a shower.

Electrical load

• Electric sauna heaters draw significant current - the supply cable must be sized for it from the outset
• Check the capacity of the house consumer unit before committing
• A dedicated circuit and isolator for the heater, installed and certified by a qualified electrician
• Wood-fired stoves avoid the load but bring flue, clearance and building control considerations

Water and drainage

If a shower or cold plunge is even a possibility, run the water supply and drainage during the groundworks. Adding either afterwards means excavating the terrace and planting you have just paid for. Foul drainage connection needs to be agreed early because it dictates where the wet zone can sit.

Materials

Inside the cabin, thermally stable timbers such as alder, aspen or thermo-treated species are used because they do not get too hot to touch. Outside it, the finishes need to tolerate humidity swings - porcelain or stone floors, moisture-resistant boards, and generous extract.

Placement in the garden

Saunas are used at night and in winter. That makes the approach path, the lighting and the sheltered spot to stand outside afterwards part of the design. A small screened terrace with a plunge tub, warm low-level lighting and evergreen planting turns a sauna from a novelty into a habit.
