Search for landscape gardeners in Sussex and you will find everything from a one-person maintenance round to a full design-and-build studio, all using the same words. They are very different services, and the gap between them is where most disappointing gardens come from. This is what to look for.

Maintenance, landscaping and landscape construction are not the same

• What is excluded? Spoil removal, access protection and electrics are the usual gaps.
• What guarantee covers the workmanship, and what covers the structures?
• Are you insured for the excavation and structural work, not just general liability?
