Luxury Car Ports: Covered Parking That Suits the House

Car ports have improved enormously. The current generation of aluminium structures - slim posts, louvred or solid roofs, integrated lighting and drainage - looks like architecture rather than a lean-to, and they cost considerably less than a garage.

Why a car port over a garage

• Far lower cost per covered square metre
• No planning implications in many cases, though always confirm locally
• Better ventilation - cars dry rather than sitting damp
• Open sides make manoeuvring and unloading easier
• Reads as a lighter structure against the house

Sizing it properly

Allow generously for door opening on both sides, and check the height against your tallest vehicle with a roof box on. Two cars need more width than twice one car. Where the car port also shelters the route to the front door, extend the roof to cover that path - it is the detail people appreciate most in winter.

Drainage and surfacing

A roof over parking concentrates rainwater. Guttering to a soakaway or attenuation crate is required, and the surface below needs falls and a permeable build-up. Resin-bound gravel, permeable block paving or large-format porcelain on a drained base all work; solid impermeable areas at the front of a property may need planning consent.

EV charging and power

Run the cable while the ground is open. A wall or post-mounted charger positioned for the parking layout, on its own protected circuit, plus lighting in the structure and a socket for cleaning equipment, covers most needs for years.

Integrate it with the garden

The mistake is treating the front as a car park. Planting beds along the structure, a clipped hedge to the boundary and a considered surface change between drive and path make the car port part of the garden rather than an intrusion into it.
